The Architecture of Asana
June 27-28, 2026
"A vase, like a building, like a body, has two spaces - the one that it contains and the one that surrounds it. When we begin asana, we worry about the shape of the pose.....the space that we exclude. By now we should be worrying about the space we include, the space within, for it is largely that which gives true life and beauty to the asana." BKS Iyengar, Light on Life
In this summer immersion, we'll be exploring the architecture or outer shape of the asana, to develop stability and focus. Once that structure has been created, we will explore the aspect of pratyhara, or withdrawal of the senses to their source. This going inward, is a process in which we begin to discover and nurture our own inner space and depths. It is not shutting down from the world, but rather cultivating the cit-akasha or space within ourselves. As we nourish and deepen our awareness of the inner space, this can lead to a feeling of freedom and expansion that we carry from our practice into our lives.
Space leads to freedom, freedom in turn leads to choice and through that, we can bolster our sense of discernment and move towards wisdom.
